Oakham Castle is the iconic historic centre of England’s smallest county.
ADMISSION IS FREE!
Our many points of interest include:
A collection of over 200 large ceremonial horseshoes presented to the Lord of the Manor of Oakham by members of the aristocracy and Royal Family on the occasion of their first visit to the town, in accordance with an ancient custom unique to this building.
The oldest court in the country still sitting in its original location.
Beautiful architecture typical of the Norman period.

• The main entrance has level access to the upper level of the Great Hall, with a ramp to the lower level. The ramp is permanent. Getting around inside
Stairs

There are no staircases in Oakham Castle. There is one step leading to the café, or access is available via the ramp. There is one step leading to the cells, which are not accessible for wheelchair users.

• From the main entrance to the desk there is level access.
Public Toilets
• There are two public toilets for disabled visitors.
• From the main entrance to the disabled public toilet there is access via a permanent ramp leading through the café and into the toilet block.
• It is also possible to gain access to the toilet block via a level path round the side of the building.
• The route is 830mm wide, or more.
• The toilet doors are 1006mm wide.
• The disabled toilet door is 860mm.
• The toilet seat is 500mm high. The toilets have handrails.
Castle Shop
• From the main entrance to the shop there is level access.
Getting around outside
Outside a smooth, level path wide enough for wheelchairs runs around most of the building. This allows a good view of the rest of the site, which is not accessible in a wheelchair due to the very sloping nature of the ground.
